WHY THE COMMISSION SUPPORTS LICENSURE
Recently several professional licensing boards have challenged Reiki as being a form of massage (massage licensing boards), energy medicine (medical and massage licensing boards) and counseling or psychotherapy (counseling and psychology licensing boards). The people brought before these licensing boards are considered guilty until they prove themselves innocent by the preponderance of evidence. This is sometimes difficult to achieve even by the innocent.
The number of complaints filed by the public against Reiki practitioners has been steadily increasing for several years. Most complaints seem to be focused on the lack of results achieved through Reiki treatments. This is an indication of the lack of intensive training in Reiki including Reiki Meditation, Reiki Grids and how to provide healing services to the public.
The number of complaints filed by other professionals against Reiki practitioners has also been steadily increasing for several years. These complaints are focused primarilly on the use of the phrase "Reiki treatment." Reiki is not a "treatment." It is a spiritual intervention. You must be a licensed health professional to provide "treatments." Or you must be working under the supervision of a health professional.
Being properly and intensely trained as a Reiki professional is not always a defense against practicing anything without a license. Being a licensed spiritual healer gives you the right to do spiritual interventions. In any country where there is separation of church and state, being a licensed spiritual healer is a defense against practicing anything without a license because you are a licensed spiritual healer. But this is true only as long as you practice spiritual healing.
All spiritual healers licensed by the Reiki License Commission are required to use a spiritual healer informed consent form and follow an approved code of professional ethics. These are both taught by the Federation of Spiritual Healer Licence Boards, of which the Reiki License Commission is a member. There are three other member organizations that we endorse. If you should decide the Reiki License Commission does not resonate with you, we recommend them to you:
